Course Introduction

Wood Work Technician trade is an engineering course of 27 months duration with four semesters. During the course, students learn cutting, shaping, timber bridges and concrete formwork. Trainees also learn making different home furniture, wood joints, assembles, repairs doors & windows, frames and other wooden fixtures of building using hand or power tools or both. The trade is career orienting in nature. After passing it successfully, trainees have so many job options in private and government sector as well as setting up own workshops.

First Semester

Trade Theory
  • Introduction of carpentry trade.
  • Safety precaution in the workshop and industrial safety.
  • Introduction of timber, growth of timber trees, cross-section of exogenous tree trunk, types of tree,  different part of a tree, Soft & hard wood, their differences.
  • Common Indian timbers.
  • Introduction of carpentry hand tools, classification and uses of marking, work holding devices.
  • Type of bench vice and their uses.
  • Introduction of different saw and their uses.
  • Saw sharpening and sharpening tools. Type of different planes and their proper uses in            woodwork – Description, function and its size, setting, knowledge of sharpening and uses etc.
Trade Practical
  • Demonstrate first aid, fire safety equipment, different types of fire extinguisher and their application.
  • Identification of different wooden sample piece i.e. – soft wood & hard wood, wooden grains etc. & their applications.
  • Demonstrate use of hand operated tools and showing different audio-visual clips.
  • Identification and use of different types of the measuring, marking and testing tools & their applications.
  • Identification and use of different types of work holding devices.
  • Demonstrate the use of bench vice, bench hook, bench stop& their application.
  • Demonstrate different types of
  1. saws- ripping
  2. cross cutting
  3. curve cutting
  4. Oblique sawing.
  • Sharpen and set different type saw blade.
  • Demonstrate the use of marking, mortise gauge etc.

Second Semester

Trade Theory
  • Measuring & testing tools.
  • Description of boring tools – Types, Parts, functions, size and application.
  • Different type chisels – Definition, identification, their uses.
  • Hand augers description, sizes of augers, application of hand augers.
  • Striking tools- Definition, types, application.
  • Function of work bench, bench vice, bench hook, etc.
Trade Practical
  • Demonstrate use of hand operated tools and showing different audio-visual clips.
  • Demonstrate the use of country drill, hand drill, ratchet brace, Breast drill and hand augers & bits.
  • Demonstrate the Auger application.
  • Demonstrate the use of different types of chisel, chiseling, chiseling along & across the grain.
  • Demonstrate use of different types of striking tool, hammer and mallets.
  • Demonstrate the use of clamps ‘G’ or ‘C’, saw sharpening vice, carpentry vice etc.

 

Third Semester

Trade Theory
  • Drill bits, types, sizes etc.
  • Sharpening and grinding angle of cutter.
  • Seasoning of timber – Definition, advantage and disadvantage of seasoning.
  • Preservation of timber.
  • Description of different dovetail joint and their function.
  • Broadening joint description.
  • Lengthening joint description.
Trade Practical
  • Demonstrate the use of portable electrical drill machine.
  • Grinding and Sharpening process of the planer blade/ cutter.
  • Demonstration and making framing joint
  • Demonstration and making Housing joints
  • Demonstration and making dovetail joint
  • Demonstration and Making broadening joints
  • Making lengthening joint
  • Making of Frame using different type of joints

Fourth Semester

Trade Theory
  • Method of making a wooden
  • Partition, Door frames, Door & window panels.
  • Calculation of timber required for stool.
  • Timbers used in furniture work – describe Sal, teak, gamar, pine, deodar etc.
  • Design of wooden wall unit uses in bed rood, dining hall, library, office, workshop classroom.
  • Nail and screws – type, Uses etc.
  • Nut, bolts and washer – types and Uses
  • Lock hinges hasp and staple.
  • Knowledge of other fittings – types, sizes and lenses.
  • Necessary tools and equipment required for staining.
  • Uses of different grade sandpaper.
  • Description & method of French polish.
  • Method of wax polish and its uses.
  • Methods of old furniture repolish.
  • Estimation process of wooden furniture.
  • Describe circular saw machine.
  • Types of circular saw machine.
  • Function of circular saw machine.
  • Different types of saw blades used in circular saw machine.
  • Safety precaution of circular saw machine.
Trade Practical
  • Make small wall bracket:
    1. Stopped Tenon & Mortise joint on hard wood in the frame to set the selves.
    2. Make selves by six pieces of hard wood with single lapped half lap dovetail joint with frame
    3. Common dovetail joint apply to lock four sides of tray (400mm X 300mm X 200mm).
    4. Bases made with ply wood (5mm thick) and make the handle.
    5. Layout of stool and make cutting List for mass production.
    6. Making a small rack by layout with hard wood and plywood.
    7. Painting and polishing or fixing sun mica with adhesive.
    8. Make a small table use of lock, hinges, hasp and staple etc. making a small box with sun mica top. (Mortise and tenon joint. ‘T’ half tap dovetail joint. Secret dovetail joint).
  • Demonstration on nailing screwing on job.

  • Polishing of Furniture:
  1. Demonstrate circular saw machine, its parts and their operational techniques with safety
